Botanically, this variety is characterized by spirally arranged, truncate leaves with translucent 'windows' on their surfaces. These windows facilitate light penetration into the internal tissues, an essential adaptation for a plant that grows partially submerged in stony, gravelly soil.

Successful cultivation requires a highly porous and inorganic substrate. A mix consisting of grit, pumice, and perlite with minimal organic matter is recommended to prevent root suffocation. Proper drainage is the most critical factor for long-term health.

The plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. While it requires light to maintain its compact shape, intense midday sun should be avoided to prevent tissue damage. Insufficient light levels will cause the plant to etiolate, losing its characteristic appearance.
