Description
Growing requirements
Bulbophyllum beccarii is a spectacular orchid species from the Orchidaceae family, native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo. It is renowned for its massive, thick leaves and extremely fragrant, clustered flowers.
To grow this species successfully, one must maintain a high humidity environment, ideally between 70% and 90%. This is essential for the healthy development of its large, waxy foliage and long, creeping rhizome.
The thermal requirements are strictly tropical, necessitating temperatures between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius. Exposure to temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius for extended periods can cause severe stress and leaf drop.
The substrate must provide excellent drainage, as the roots are sensitive to waterlogging. Most growers prefer mounting the plant on large driftwood or cork slabs, or using hanging baskets with coarse fir bark.
Lighting should be bright but indirect. Intense, direct sun will scorch the leaves quickly, so placing the plant in a shaded area within a greenhouse or near a bright, filtered window is recommended.
Main diseases and pests
The most common disease affecting this species is root and crown rot, primarily caused by excessive moisture or poor air circulation. Proper ventilation is vital to keep the plant healthy.
Pests such as scale insects and mealybugs are frequently observed on this orchid. They prefer the tight spaces around the pseudobulbs and can cause significant damage if not treated promptly.
Fungal infections can spread rapidly in high-humidity environments if water is allowed to pool on the leaves. Always ensure that the crown of the plant is dry by the evening.
Using improper fertilizers can lead to salt accumulation in the substrate, which burns the sensitive root tips. It is recommended to use diluted, orchid-specific fertilizer sparingly during the growing season.
Regular monitoring and physical removal of pests using alcohol-dipped cotton swabs is often more effective than chemical treatments, which can sometimes be harsh on the delicate orchid tissue.
