Buddleja pikei (Buddleja x pikei) is an interspecific hybrid belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. This perennial deciduous shrub resulted from breeding efforts crossing Buddleja alternifolia and Buddleja davidii.
The plant is highly valued for its aesthetic appeal, characterized by graceful arching stems and spike-like inflorescences composed of numerous small florets. Botanically, it inherits hardiness from one parent and extended flowering duration from the other.
For successful cultivation, the plant requires open, sunny locations protected from cold northern winds. It thrives in moderately fertile, loose, and well-drained soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
The culture is sensitive to waterlogging in the root zone; therefore, installing a drainage layer is mandatory when planting in heavy clay soils. In regions with harsh winters, the shrub requires additional root system protection using mulching materials.
Agrotechnical practices include regular pruning performed in early spring before sap flow begins. This stimulates the growth of new shoots and ensures abundant flowering on current-year growth, which is a key biological characteristic of this hybrid.
Main diseases and pests
The primary pests affecting Buddleja pikei are spider mites and whiteflies. During hot, dry weather, these insects multiply rapidly on the undersides of leaves, causing yellowing and premature leaf drop.
Among fungal diseases, gray mold is considered the most hazardous for this crop, developing under high humidity conditions and poor air circulation within the shrub. Infected stems should be removed and destroyed immediately.
To prevent pathogens, it is necessary to strictly manage irrigation, avoiding overhead watering, and conduct timely sanitary pruning. The use of systemic fungicides is recommended upon the first signs of leaf spots.
Pest control involves the application of broad-spectrum insecticides and acaricides. It is important to rotate products to prevent the development of pest resistance.
Regular application of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers increases the plant's natural resistance to diseases by strengthening cell walls and accelerating stem lignification before the onset of winter.
