Growing requirements

This interspecific hybrid belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and combines the compact, clumping habit of Aloe humilis with the therapeutic properties and leaf structure of Aloe vera. The plant produces dense rosettes of thick, succulent leaves with distinct marginal teeth.

The hybrid requires bright, indirect light to thrive and maintain its structural integrity. While it can handle some morning sun, excessive exposure to harsh afternoon rays during the summer can scorch the leaf surface and cause color bleaching.

Soil composition is critical for this species. It must be highly porous and fast-draining to prevent water retention around the root ball. A standard succulent mix amended with coarse sand, pumice, or perlite is considered ideal for cultivation.

Temperature requirements are moderate, with an active growth phase between +20°C and +25°C. During the dormant winter season, the plant benefits from cooler temperatures ranging from +12°C to +15°C to rest properly and develop a healthy root system.

Watering must be strictly regulated. The substrate should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During winter, hydration should be significantly reduced, provided only to prevent extreme dehydration of the leaves.

Main diseases and pests

Root rot is the most common ailment caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Symptoms include wilting leaves and a mushy base; if discovered early, the plant can be salvaged by repotting into fresh, dry, gritty media.

Mealybugs are frequent pests that congregate in the leaf axils, sucking sap from the plant. Manual removal with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol is effective for minor infestations, while systemic insecticides are used for severe cases.

Scale insects can attach themselves to the leaves, appearing as small, brownish bumps. These pests must be manually removed or treated with horticultural oils to prevent them from sapping the plant's vitality.

Spider mites may infest the foliage during periods of low humidity. The presence of fine webbing indicates an infestation, requiring immediate isolation of the plant and an increase in surrounding humidity levels.

Fungal leaf spot often arises when humidity is too high and air circulation is poor. To mitigate this risk, keep the plant in a well-ventilated area and ensure that water never remains trapped in the center of the rosette.
