Aloe descoingsii is a unique botanical species belonging to the Asphodelaceae family, renowned for being the smallest known species within the Aloe genus. It forms dense, small rosettes of triangular leaves that rarely grow larger than a few inches in size.

This species is endemic to the limestone regions of Madagascar. Its natural habitat is characterized by arid conditions, where the plant thrives in small crevices with minimal organic soil, reflecting its high tolerance for poor substrate conditions.

The cultivation of this plant requires abundant natural light to maintain its specific aesthetic form and avoid etiolation. In a domestic setting, south-facing windows or supplemental LED grow lights are essential during the shorter winter days.

Soil structure is critical for this species; it requires a highly porous, inorganic-heavy mix. A blend consisting of 50% pumice or perlite and 50% high-quality gritty cactus potting soil is highly recommended for optimal drainage.

Temperature management should mimic its native environment: warm and airy summers with temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, and a dry, cooler rest period during winter months at temperatures around 10°C to 15°C.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to Aloe descoingsii is overwatering, which quickly leads to root decay. Due to its small size, once the root system is compromised, the plant is extremely difficult to recover, making drainage the absolute priority.

Mealybugs are the most persistent pest for this species. They tend to hide deep within the dense rosettes, often going unnoticed until the infestation is advanced, at which point they can cause significant damage to the plant's structural integrity.

Scale insects can also pose a problem, attaching themselves to the leaves. Regular inspection of the leaves under a magnifying glass is a recommended maintenance practice to catch potential infestations at an early stage.

Fungal infections, characterized by dark, watery spots on the leaves, usually occur when there is poor air circulation and high humidity. It is vital to provide good airflow around the pot to ensure the surface of the soil stays dry.

Finally, extreme temperature fluctuations can stress the plant, making it more susceptible to opportunistic pathogens. Consistent environmental conditions are key to keeping this delicate succulent healthy throughout the year.
