Common purslane

Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an annual plant belonging to the Portulacaceae family. It is characterized by its succulent, smooth, reddish stems that spread along the ground.

The leaves are fleshy, succulent, and spoon-shaped or obovate. They grow in alternate or opposite clusters along the thick, juicy stems, which can reach significant lengths.

Small yellow flowers emerge in the leaf axils or stem tips. These flowers typically bloom only during bright, sunny mornings and are usually closed on cloudy days.

The plant produces tiny, kidney-shaped seeds that are dark brown or black. A single plant can produce a massive amount of seeds, which are highly resilient to environmental stress.

Its root system consists of a strong taproot, supplemented by secondary roots that can easily form at any node if the stem remains in contact with moist soil.

Common purslane thrives in warm, sunny environments with fertile, loose, and slightly moist soil. It is a highly adaptable species found in almost all temperate and tropical regions.

It is a pervasive weed in vegetable gardens, cultivated fields, landscapes, and along pathways. It is especially troublesome in crops that require frequent irrigation.

Because it grows rapidly during the hottest parts of the summer, it easily outcompetes slower-growing vegetable crops for space, light, and nutrients.

It is commonly found in tilled fields, flower beds, and nurseries, where frequent soil disturbance creates the perfect conditions for new seedlings to emerge.

The plant spreads via seeds dispersed by water, agricultural machinery, and human activity, making it difficult to eradicate once it establishes a seed bank.

The main threat posed by common purslane is its aggressive competition for soil moisture and nutrients, which can significantly stunt the growth of desired crops.

By forming dense mats, it shades the soil and emerging seedlings, preventing proper aeration and heat absorption required by many vegetable varieties.

The dense vegetative cover can trap moisture and humidity, creating a microclimate that promotes fungal diseases and pest infestation in crops like onions or lettuce.

Purslane can cause significant economic loss by reducing crop yields, increasing labor costs for manual weeding, and interfering with mechanical harvesting processes.

The long-term persistence of its seeds in the soil makes it a recurring problem for farmers, as dormant seeds can germinate years after the initial infestation.

Cultural control is essential: early removal of the plant before it sets seeds is critical to prevent the population from exploding in future seasons.
