Description

Mode of action

Rimsulfuron belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical class and is a highly effective systemic herbicide used for post-emergence weed control. Its mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is essential for the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine.

Upon contact with the plant, the active ingredient is rapidly absorbed through the leaves and translocated via the xylem and phloem to the meristematic tissues. This leads to the immediate cessation of cell division and subsequent weed death within several weeks.

Sensitive weeds stop competing with crops for water and nutrients within hours after application. Visible symptoms, including chlorosis and necrosis, typically appear within 3 to 7 days, depending on environmental conditions.

Selectivity is achieved through the crop's ability, particularly in corn, to rapidly metabolize and deactivate the herbicide into safe compounds, ensuring that the target crop remains unharmed.

Due to its high biological activity even at very low application rates, it serves as a cost-effective and environmentally favorable solution for large-scale agricultural operations.

What it targets

Rimsulfuron demonstrates excellent performance against a wide range of annual and perennial grass weeds, including difficult-to-control species such as quackgrass (Elymus repens) and Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense).

The herbicide is also effective against several broadleaf weed species, including amaranth and knotweed, provided that applications are timed during the early stages of weed development.

Optimal control is achieved when grass weeds are at the 1–3 leaf stage and broadleaf weeds are at the 2–4 leaf stage, ensuring that the herbicide is applied during the active growth phase.

It is primarily used in corn, potatoes, and tomatoes, where selective elimination of competitive weeds is required to protect the yield potential of the crop.

To broaden the spectrum of controlled weeds, Rimsulfuron is frequently used in tank mixtures with other herbicides, which also helps in managing potential weed resistance.

Rates and timing

Application rates vary based on the weed spectrum, weed density, and the growth stage of the crop, typically ranging from 30 to 50 grams of the active ingredient per hectare.

The use of a non-ionic surfactant is mandatory to improve the wetting of the leaf surface and facilitate the rapid uptake of the herbicide by the target plants.

The best application window for corn is when the crop is in the 2–6 leaf stage, which provides the best balance between safety for the crop and efficacy against weeds.

In tomato production, timing depends on the planting method: for transplants, it is applied after establishment, while for direct-seeded crops, it is used after the 2–3 true leaf stage.

The spray solution must be prepared immediately before use, ensuring strict adherence to dosage recommendations to prevent phytotoxicity and guarantee uniform coverage across the field.

Restrictions

Avoid applying Rimsulfuron to crops that are under stress caused by drought, frost, extreme temperatures, or pest infestations, as this can reduce the crop's ability to metabolize the herbicide.

Crop rotation restrictions must be considered, as soil residual activity can persist depending on environmental conditions and soil pH, which may affect sensitive follow-up crops.

Do not mix Rimsulfuron with organophosphate insecticides, as this interaction can block the detoxification process in corn, leading to significant crop injury.

Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines must be followed during application, including the use of gloves, long-sleeved clothing, and respirators to prevent chemical exposure.

Drift management is critical to prevent unintended damage to sensitive neighboring crops or non-target plants surrounding the application area.
