Systematically, they belong to the order Hymenoptera. As specialized parasitoids, they focus their life cycle on the larvae or eggs of other insects. By targeting agricultural pests such as caterpillars (Lepidoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), and various flies, they perform a regulatory function that keeps pest populations below economic threshold levels.
The biology of braconids is specialized: the female uses an ovipositor to deposit eggs inside or onto the host insect. The larval stage develops internally, consuming the host from within until the host dies. This high level of specialization makes them highly effective at suppressing specific pest species before they can cause significant damage to crops.
They contribute significantly to crop health by reducing the number of defoliators and borers. Their activity effectively lowers the dependence on chemical intervention, making them an asset rather than a liability in sustainable agriculture. They do not feed on crops, but rather ensure that pest populations remain manageable through natural ecological processes.
