By feeding on the mycelium, they directly weaken the crop and create favorable conditions for competitive molds and harmful bacteria to thrive. Their presence often coincides with a drop in mushroom yield and quality.

The biology of Pygmephoridae is marked by rapid reproductive rates and a short life cycle, which allows populations to explode under the warm, humid conditions of mushroom growing rooms. They often utilize phoresy, where the mites attach themselves to larger insects like sciarid flies or phorid flies to disperse effectively throughout the growing facility.
