The family Dermanyssidae belongs to the order Mesostigmata. These mites are significant ectoparasites known globally for their detrimental impact on poultry production. The most notorious member, Dermanyssus gallinae, is a temporary parasite that feeds on bird blood during the night.

While Dermanyssidae do not directly infest crop plants, they are a major pest within the agricultural ecosystem, specifically in poultry farming. They pose a constant threat to chickens, turkeys, and game birds, hiding in poultry house structures, cages, and nest boxes during the daylight hours.
The biology of these mites is characterized by a rapid life cycle. Under favourable conditions of temperature and humidity, the development from egg to adult takes approximately one week. This high reproductive rate allows them to reach pestilential numbers within a short timeframe, making them extremely difficult to eradicate once established.
The damage caused by these mites is primarily through blood feeding, which leads to anemia, reduced egg production, and poor overall condition of the flock. Furthermore, they are vectors for several avian diseases, potentially causing massive economic losses and increasing the mortality rate among vulnerable young birds.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Dermanyssidae populations. Strategies should include:
