These mites typically inhabit the organic layer of the soil, feeding on decaying plant material, fungi, and detritus. In agricultural settings, particularly in nurseries or high-moisture greenhouses, the abundance of organic matter can lead to a population explosion, causing them to forage on the soft tissues of root systems or seedling hypocotyls.

The life cycle of Scheloribatidae consists of an egg, prelarva, larva, three nymphal stages (protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph), and the adult phase. The duration of their development is heavily dependent on soil moisture and temperature. They thrive in damp, undisturbed soils, which allow them to complete their cycle relatively quickly under optimal conditions.

The direct damage caused by these mites involves feeding lesions on root hairs and primary roots. These small wounds are often the entry point for various soil-borne pathogens, such as Pythium or Fusarium species. Consequently, the primary harm is not direct tissue destruction, but rather the facilitation of root rot diseases that lead to stunted growth and seedling mortality.

Effective management strategies focus on modifying the environment to reduce mite viability:
