While they are primarily known for their role as house dust mites, their presence in agricultural settings can lead to the deterioration of organic products, stored grains, and seeds.

Taxonomically, these organisms belong to the order Sarcoptiformes. They are tiny arachnids that thrive in environments characterized by high humidity and the accumulation of organic debris. In an agricultural context, they act as indicators of suboptimal hygiene practices in storage or greenhouse conditions.

The damage caused by Pyroglyphidae is primarily related to the contamination of stored commodities. By feeding on organic matter, they facilitate the spread of fungal spores and contribute to the secondary degradation of seeds and grains, significantly impacting the viability and storage shelf-life of the agricultural stock.

The biology of Pyroglyphidae involves a rapid life cycle consisting of the egg, larva, protonymph, tritonymph, and adult stages.
