Description
How to identify
The California flatheaded borer (Phaenops californica) is a member of the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are typically 8–12 mm long, featuring an elongated, flattened body shape that is highly characteristic of the jewel beetle group. Their cuticle often displays a metallic, bronze or green iridescent sheen, which serves as camouflage against the bark of host trees.
What it damages
This wood-boring insect primarily targets various species of the genus Pinus. While it prefers to colonize weakened, stressed, or wind-thrown pines, in cases of high population density, it can successfully infest apparently healthy trees, leading to significant physiological decline and potential mortality of the stand.
When it appears
The life cycle of this borer is synchronized with the seasonal warming trends. Adult emergence usually begins in late spring and continues through mid-summer. This period is critical for the insect as adults engage in maturation feeding on needles and tender shoots before seeking suitable host trees for oviposition under the bark scales.
Signs of infestation
Evidence of an infestation is manifested by characteristic D-shaped exit holes on the tree trunk, created by emerging adults. Internally, the larval galleries are packed with frass, effectively girdling the tree by destroying the cambium layer. Externally, this results in chlorosis, flagging of the crown, and eventual browning of the needles.
Control measures
Management strategies for this borer focus heavily on preventative silvicultural practices.
- Prioritize the removal and destruction of infested and storm-damaged timber.
- Sanitation harvesting must occur before the emergence of the new adult generation.
- Application of contact insecticides during the peak adult flight period.
- Improving tree vigor through proper forest density management.
- Regular monitoring using specialized pheromone or trap logs to detect early infestations.
