Sugarcane froghopper

The Mahanarva posticata, commonly known as the sugarcane froghopper, is a hemipteran insect belonging to the family Cercopidae. This pest is economically significant, particularly in the sugarcane industry in South America, where it can cause substantial yield losses if not properly managed.

The primary host for this insect is sugarcane, although it can occasionally be found on other forage grasses. Both adults and nymphs feed on the phloem sap of the plant. Their feeding activity is persistent and can lead to severe physiological stress in the host plants, affecting both growth rates and sugar content.

The life cycle involves eggs laid in the soil or plant debris, followed by five nymphal instars and the adult stage. The nymphs are well-known for producing a mass of white foam, often referred to as "spittle," which protects them from predators and environmental desiccation, allowing them to thrive during the wet season.

Damage is characterized by chlorosis, wilting, and reduced biomass of the sugarcane stalks. In cases of high infestation, the plants exhibit necrosis of the leaf tissues, which significantly lowers the quality of the harvested cane. Additionally, the plants become highly susceptible to other pathogens, further impacting yield quantity and quality.

Management strategies focus on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes the application of biological control agents such as the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, which has proven effective in field conditions. Chemical control with targeted insecticides is used when threshold levels are exceeded, alongside cultural practices like removing crop residues to reduce egg survival.
