Adults are identified by their wings, which are held roof-like over their bodies at rest. The biology of alderflies is heavily dependent on water. Females deposit eggs on vegetation hanging over water bodies. Upon hatching, the larvae fall into the water, where they remain for several years, living as active predators. They feed on various aquatic invertebrates, including midge larvae and other small creatures living in the substrate, playing an ecological role in aquatic ecosystems.

Because they are not phytophagous in their larval stage and do not feed as adults, they do not cause direct economic damage to crops.
