Earthworms

The primary damage occurs in high-density seedbeds or containers where earthworms disturb the soil profile. They create air pockets around root systems, leading to rapid desiccation of roots and stunted growth in seedlings that have not yet established a strong root system.

Their life cycle revolves around moisture levels and organic matter availability. Earthworms are hermaphroditic and lay cocoons in the soil. In protected environments with abundant organic fertilizers, their reproductive rate significantly increases, leading to potential overpopulation.

In terms of harmfulness, they physically damage delicate root hairs and disrupt the contact between the roots and the growth medium. This stress makes the plants significantly more vulnerable to secondary infections, such as root rot and damping-off diseases.

Protecting plants involves cultural practices such as using sterilized potting mixes, managing irrigation to prevent waterlogging, and avoiding excessive raw organic matter. In extreme cases, mechanical barriers or specific natural soil drenching treatments can manage their density effectively.
