The Ictaluridae family, commonly known as North American catfish, represents a group of freshwater fish rather than agricultural plant pests. It is a biological misunderstanding to classify them as crop-destroying agents, as they do not feed on plant foliage, roots, or seeds under normal conditions.

Systematically, they are classified within the order Siluriformes. This family includes major commercial species such as the Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). They are characterized by a lack of scales and sensory barbels, which allow them to navigate in murky, low-oxygen water conditions typical of agricultural runoff or irrigation ponds.
While they do not consume crops, their presence in agricultural water systems can be problematic. The main form of damage occurs when catfish burrow into the banks of irrigation ditches or embankments of rice paddies, potentially causing structural instability, water leaks, or increased soil erosion near field edges.
The biology and lifecycle of these fish are adapted for survival in variable environments. Reproduction involves nest-building in underwater cavities or debris, with parental care provided primarily by the male. Juveniles feed on zooplankton and small aquatic organisms, while adults occupy a higher trophic level as omnivorous scavengers.
Protective measures are essentially engineering solutions rather than pest control. To manage their presence, farmers utilize screen filters on irrigation intakes to prevent fish from entering distribution channels. Conversely, many farmers integrate these fish into aquaculture systems to maximize the productivity of water resources alongside standard crop rotation.
