Sunn pest (Eurygaster integriceps) is one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting cereal crops worldwide. It belongs to the Scutelleridae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is a major threat to wheat, barley, and other small grains, particularly in the regions of Central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe.

The life cycle of the Sunn pest typically consists of one generation per year. Adult insects overwinter in mountainous or forest litter, emerging in the spring when temperatures consistently reach 12-14°C. They migrate to grain fields, where they feed on the succulent parts of the plants and proceed to reproduce by laying eggs on the undersides of leaves.

The damage caused by the Sunn pest is twofold: mechanical and biochemical. While nymphs and adults feed on the stems, they can cause the grain head to wither or result in "whiteheads." More significantly, during the grain filling stage, they inject salivary enzymes into the developing kernels. This proteolytic action degrades the gluten, rendering the flour unsuitable for baking bread.

Agricultural impact is severe, as even a small population can significantly lower the grade of the harvest. If a high percentage of kernels are damaged, the entire crop may be rejected for milling purposes because the dough loses its structural integrity and processing quality.

Effective management strategies for Sunn pest include:

  • Cultivating early-maturing varieties to escape the peak feeding period.
  • Implementing precise monitoring systems to determine the economic threshold before applying treatments.
  • Utilizing biological control agents, particularly egg parasitoids like Telenomus species.
