The family Balanidae, commonly known as acorn barnacles, belongs to the order Sessilia. While typically regarded as marine organisms, they pose a significant threat to agricultural water management systems that rely on pumping water from estuarine or coastal sources for large-scale irrigation and equipment cooling.

These organisms do not damage crops directly, but they are severe pests for irrigation infrastructure. They colonize intake pipes, irrigation pumps, filter systems, and spray nozzles, effectively disrupting the delivery of water to fields and greenhouses.
The life cycle of Balanidae is highly adapted for dispersal. It begins with free-swimming planktonic larval stages (nauplius and cyprid). The cyprid larvae are specialized for finding hard substrates; once a suitable surface is found, they cement themselves permanently and begin secreting their protective calcareous shells.
The damage caused by these pests is known as biofouling. Massive colonies of barnacles increase surface roughness, drastically reducing flow capacity and pump efficiency. This leads to increased friction, higher energy consumption, mechanical cavitation in pumps, and frequent clogging of essential agricultural filtration systems.
Effective protection against Balanidae focuses on prevention. Strategies include applying non-toxic antifouling coatings, installing sacrificial anodes to prevent corrosion, and using mechanical cleaning systems. Additionally, ultrasonic vibration systems are widely used to prevent larvae from adhering to intake pipes during peak settlement seasons.
