Systematically, these nematodes function as lethal parasites of insects. While they do not infest or harm plant tissues, their interaction with the soil ecosystem is significant. The biological cycle of Steinernematidae is deeply intertwined with symbiotic bacteria of the genus Xenorhabdus. Upon entering the host's hemocoel, the nematode releases these bacteria, which kill the insect by inducing septicemia. The nematodes then feed on the nutrient-rich cadaver, progressing through several developmental stages before emerging to infect new hosts.
