Systematic position. Ferussaciidae are a family of small to medium-sized air-breathing land snails, belonging to the order Stylommatophora. These gastropods are predominantly soil-dwelling, often residing in deeper layers of the soil or beneath dense vegetation, which allows them to avoid detection while feeding on plant tissues.

Crops damaged. These snails are known to feed on a diverse range of crops, including various leafy vegetables, root crops, ornamental plants, and seedling stages of field crops. They are particularly problematic in greenhouses, nurseries, and humid gardens where the soil moisture remains consistently high, providing an ideal environment for their survival.

Biology and life cycle. Being hermaphroditic, Ferussaciidae possess a high reproductive potential. They thrive in damp conditions and utilize organic mulch or soil organic matter as a primary habitat and food source. The lifecycle involves depositing eggs directly into the soil, which hatch into miniature versions of adults, quickly beginning their cycle of feeding and rapid maturation under favorable moisture conditions.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The feeding behavior of these snails involves rasping plant tissues with their radula, resulting in irregular holes in leaves, shredded seedlings, and damaged roots. Significant infestations can lead to substantial yield losses. Furthermore, their presence is often associated with the secondary spread of fungal and bacterial infections through the mechanical damage they inflict on plants.

Protection measures. Managing Ferussaciidae requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach focusing on habitat modification and chemical control when necessary. Recommended strategies include:

  • regular soil cultivation to disrupt snail burrows and destroy egg clusters;
