Haliotids (Haliotidae), commonly referred to as abalone, are a family of marine gastropod mollusks. While they are often cultivated for commercial purposes, they can act as pests in coastal aquaculture systems by grazing upon valuable macroalgae crops, significantly reducing yields.

Taxonomically, they belong to the order Archaeogastropoda and the family Haliotidae. They are characterized by a flattened, ear-shaped shell with a series of respiratory pores, allowing them to remain securely attached to substrates, including those where desired aquatic vegetation is grown.

These mollusks are herbivorous, primarily feeding on various species of kelp and other macroalgae. In dense populations, their feeding activity can clear entire areas of cultivated seaweed, causing severe economic damage to marine farming operations and disrupting the growth cycles of the host plants.

Their life cycle begins as planktonic larvae, which settle onto hard surfaces to undergo metamorphosis. Once settled, they grow into juvenile and eventually adult forms, moving slowly to forage for food. Their survival is highly sensitive to water temperature and environmental quality.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies to minimize crop loss:

  • Deployment of physical barriers to isolate crops from grazing areas.
  • Monitoring of larval settling patterns to predict infestation risks.
  • Regular manual or mechanical clearing of target production sites.

By maintaining appropriate water flow and nutrient levels, farmers can sometimes deter excessive population growth. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices focusing on ecosystem monitoring are essential for mitigating the negative impact of haliotids on marine botanical production.
