The Clausiliidae family, commonly known as door snails, consists of terrestrial gastropod molluscs. While many species are harmless, in agricultural settings, they can become pests by feeding on various plant tissues, particularly in humid garden environments or greenhouse conditions.

The biological success of door snails is linked to the clausilium, a unique plate that seals the aperture of their shell. This structure prevents desiccation during dry spells, allowing them to survive in harsh conditions. Their life cycle typically involves laying eggs in moist soil or leaf litter, with juveniles emerging to graze on nearby plant material shortly thereafter.
These molluscs cause damage by scraping off the epidermis and consuming young leaves, stems, and seedling tissues. In garden settings, high densities of these snails can result in significant skeletonization of foliage, which is particularly detrimental to tender vegetable starts and ornamental plants that require healthy leaves for photosynthesis.
The severity of their impact lies in the physiological stress placed on the host plant. By creating open wounds, door snails facilitate the entry of secondary infections, such as bacterial soft rots and various fungal pathogens. This secondary damage is often more destructive to the plant's health than the physical consumption of the tissue itself.
Integrated pest management is the best approach to control Clausiliidae populations. Key strategies include improving soil drainage to make the environment less hospitable, removing garden debris that provides daytime shelter, and creating physical barriers such as crushed eggshells or copper tape. In severe infestations, approved molluscicides can be used carefully to target the pests without harming beneficial garden organisms.
