This pest primarily infests members of the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families, including onions, garlic, shallots, tulips, daffodils, and lilies. The larvae typically attack the basal plate of the bulb, creating a point of entry that allows further rot and fungal colonization to occur, often leading to the complete destruction of the crop.
The life cycle of the lesser bulb fly generally involves two generations per year. They overwinter as larvae in the soil or within infested bulbs. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae pupate, eventually emerging as adult flies. The adults lay their eggs in the soil cracks near the base of the host plants, ensuring the larvae have easy access to the plant tissues upon hatching.
