The cabbage root fly Delia planipalpis is a dipteran pest belonging to the Anthomyiidae family. It is a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets plants within the Brassicaceae family, often causing severe damage to commercial vegetable crops.
Adult flies are small, greyish insects, measuring approximately 6–7 mm in length. Their appearance is similar to many other anthomyiid flies, making species-specific identification difficult without expert entomological verification.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in the soil or in the crevices around the base of the plant stem, which allows newly hatched larvae to access the roots immediately.
The larvae are legless, white maggots that feed exclusively on the root system and the lower stems of host plants. Their cryptic behavior makes early detection challenging for farmers and gardeners.
This species overwinters as a puparium in the soil, which provides a protective barrier against environmental fluctuations, ensuring a high survival rate for the next growing season.
What it damages
Delia planipalpis primarily infests cultivated brassicas, including all cabbage varieties, radishes, turnips, and rutabagas. It also thrives on various wild cruciferous weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
Damage is caused by the larval feeding process, as they bore galleries into the main root or the lower portion of the stem. This structural damage disrupts water and nutrient uptake, leading to severe physiological stress in the plant.

Large-scale outbreaks can devastate entire fields, causing significant economic losses to farmers due to reduced yield and poor crop quality that does not meet market standards.
When it appears
Adult activity usually begins in spring when soil temperatures reach favorable levels. This timing is often synchronized with the early stages of brassica development or transplanting into the field.
Depending on the climatic zone, the pest can complete several generations per season. The intensity of each generation depends on soil moisture, temperature, and the abundance of host plants.
The later generations of the season pose a major risk to late-maturing cabbage crops. Maggots from these cycles often tunnel into the base of the head, causing substantial internal decay.
The flies prefer warm and dry conditions for their activity and egg-laying flights, although moist soil often assists the movement of newly emerged larvae toward the root zone.
As the season progresses toward autumn, the population activity slows down, and the final generation enters the pupal stage in the soil to survive the winter dormancy.
Signs of infestation
The first external sign of an infestation is the drooping or wilting of leaves during the heat of the day, which may temporarily recover during the cooler night hours.
A closer inspection of the plant base usually reveals structural damage. If the plant is pulled from the ground, the root system will often be found partially destroyed or covered in larval tunnels.
Leaves of affected plants may exhibit yellowing or bluish tints, indicating nutrient deficiency resulting from the compromised vascular system of the damaged roots.
The surface of the soil around the base of the plant may show tiny egg clusters or small exit holes if larvae have completed their development and moved to the soil to pupate.
A foul, putrid odor emanating from the soil or the root base often indicates that secondary rotting processes have already begun due to the tunneling activity.
Control measures
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Delia planipalpis, focusing on both preventative measures and judicious insecticide application.
- Implement long-term crop rotation, avoiding brassica species in the same field for at least 3–4 years.
