The primary hosts of these pests include various species within the Rosaceae family. Fruit crops such as peaches, plums, apples, pears, and quinces are particularly susceptible. The larvae are specialized feeders that inhabit the fruit tissue, effectively hiding from predators and conventional contact-based control methods during their development.

The life cycle of Carposinidae typically involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs as mature larvae inside silk-lined cocoons, usually located in the soil or protected crevices of the bark. Upon the arrival of warmer weather, they pupate and emerge as adults. Mating and oviposition occur shortly after, with eggs laid near the fruit surface to facilitate immediate larval entry.

Damage is characterized by larvae tunneling into the fruit to feed on the pulp and seeds. This activity leads to the production of frass (larval excrement) and secondary rotting of the fruit tissue. In stone fruits, the presence of the larva often triggers gummosis, where the tree secretes resin around the entry point, rendering the fruit unmarketable and prone to early abscission.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control:

  • Sanitation, including the prompt removal and destruction of fallen fruits to prevent larval migration into the soil.
  • Monitoring using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
  • Application of selective insecticides targeting the period of egg hatching.
