The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected canes that were left in the field. As temperatures rise in spring, the pycnidia (fruiting bodies) release spores. These spores are disseminated to healthy tissues through splashing rain, irrigation, or wind.
High humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal conditions for the development of the pathogen. Once a spore lands on a susceptible cane, it germinates and enters the plant through physical wounds or natural openings in the bark.
Identification of this disease requires careful observation during the growing season. The presence of characteristic necrotic spots on the canes, often accompanied by the emergence of black pycnidia, confirms the presence of the pathogen.
Effective management begins with correct identification. Growers should distinguish this from other cane blights to apply the most appropriate control methods. Monitoring the lower sections of the canes is particularly important for early detection.
