Biologically, the fungus produces pycnidia, which are small, flask-shaped fruit bodies that rupture the epidermis to release conidial spores into the environment.

It prefers warm, humid environments, which facilitate the rapid spread of conidia and the successful colonization of new host tissues.

Once inside the plant, the fungal mycelium grows within the vascular tissues, slowly choking the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients effectively.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various palm trees, both in tropical climates and controlled environments like greenhouses and nurseries.

The damage is systemic, as the fungus interferes with the vascular system, leading to canopy thinning and overall tree decline over an extended period.

In severe cases, the fungal growth can girdle the trunk, causing the complete obstruction of nutrient flow and leading to the eventual death of the palm.

Young, newly transplanted, or heat-stressed palms are particularly vulnerable, as their defense mechanisms are often overwhelmed by the rapid development of the fungus.

The pathogen is highly persistent, capable of remaining in dead tissue and plant debris for years, acting as a constant reservoir for new infections.

One of the earliest signs is the appearance of sunken, darkened lesions on the trunk or the base of the petioles, often indicating localized tissue necrosis.

As the infection progresses, small, dark, pimple-like structures (pycnidia) appear on the affected surface, which are visible to the naked eye.

Leaves will show distinct signs of chlorosis, followed by browning and necrosis, which typically starts from the lowest leaves and moves upward.

Internally, the tissue may display vascular discoloration, with a transition from healthy white/cream tissue to a brown or reddish-brown hue in infected areas.

Always disinfect all pruning tools with a 10% bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol before moving from one plant to another to prevent cross-contamination.

The application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments can help protect susceptible areas after surgery or as a preventative measure.
