How to identify
Cytospora canker is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cytospora kunzei. It is a member of the Diaporthales order and is known for causing localized necrosis in the bark of conifers.
The fungus acts as a wound parasite, infecting trees through bark injuries such as winter sunscald, frost cracks, or mechanical damage from gardening equipment or pruning.
Once inside, the pathogen invades the vascular cambium and phloem, eventually creating cankers that girdle stems and branches, effectively starving the foliage above the infection site.
The fungus produces fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which manifest as small, raised bumps under the bark. These are the primary sites for spore production.
Under humid conditions, the pathogen releases spore masses through the bark openings in the form of bright orange, yellow, or red gelatinous tendrils known as cirri.
What it damages
The disease primarily affects Blue Spruce (Picea pungens), but it is also found on Norway Spruce and other coniferous species in stressed forest stands or urban landscapes.
Susceptibility is highest in mature, cone-bearing trees. Environmental stress, such as drought, compacted soil, or heavy pollution, significantly increases the tree's vulnerability.
The damage often begins in the lower branches of the canopy. As the fungus spreads inward toward the trunk, the tree loses its aesthetic appeal and structural health.
If the infection reaches the main trunk, it leads to the formation of a stem canker, which can eventually cause the death of the entire tree over several growing seasons.
Affected trees often exhibit dieback, which provides an entry point for secondary wood-boring insects, further weakening the tree and accelerating its decline.
Signs of infestation
The earliest symptom is the needle discoloration on lower branches, where needles turn yellow, then brown, and eventually drop off, starting from the base of the branch.
Distinct sunken areas (cankers) develop on the bark of infected branches. These areas may appear darker than healthy bark and are frequently accompanied by sap or resin flow.
Tiny black pimple-like structures, the pycnidia, can be seen erupting through the bark surface, particularly on the dead or dying branch sections.
During moist weather, look for orange-colored ooze or sticky tendrils extruding from these fruiting bodies, which are a definitive diagnostic sign of the pathogen.
If the bark is peeled back in the infected zone, the underlying tissue will show a distinct reddish-brown discoloration, confirming that the fungal mycelium has colonized the wood.
Control measures
Pruning is the most effective management tool. Dead and infected branches must be removed during dry weather, with cuts made several inches back into healthy, green wood.
Maintain tree vigor by providing adequate irrigation during dry spells and avoiding soil compaction near the root zone, as healthy trees have better natural defenses.
Preventive fungicide applications, specifically copper-based products, can be used in spring and fall to protect healthy branches from spore infection.
Systemic fungicides are recommended for intensive management, helping to suppress fungal growth within the plant tissues and preventing the spread of cankers.
Strict sanitation is required: sanitize all pruning tools with a 10% bleach or alcohol solution between cuts to ensure the disease is not spread from branch to branch.
