The Watermelon variety Solntsedar is an ultra-early variety with bright golden-yellow fruits of medium size, weighing from 3.5 to 4.0 kg. The flesh is characterized by high sugar content, juiciness, and a rich watermelon aroma, while containing almost no seeds. The maturity period is only 67-73 days after germination, which makes this variety particularly attractive for growing in the central belt of Russia and in the south, as well as in the north-eastern regions of Europe under film shelters.
Solntsedar is distinguished by high drought resistance and disease resistance, which facilitates care and increases crop stability. The yield of the variety reaches up to 9 kg per square meter. Plants are recommended to be grown on sandy and sandy-loam soils, avoiding excessive moisture. For planting, choose well-lit, slightly elevated areas protected from winds. Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in late April, and transplanting seedlings is done in late May or early June when the plants reach an age of 30-35 days. Before sowing, seeds are treated with a potassium permanganate solution and rinsed with clean water.
For optimal growth and fruit formation, plants are tied to trellises. Until a height of 50 cm, all side shoots are removed, and subsequent ones are pinched above the 1-3 leaf. The planting scheme is 70×150 cm. Such an approach contributes to good ventilation and lighting of plants, which positively affects the quality and quantity of the harvest. Solntsedar is well suited for growing both in open ground in the south and under film shelters in more northern regions.
