Watermelon variety New Year is a high-yielding medium-ripening variety with a vegetative period from seedling emergence to fruit maturity of 85–87 days. The fruits are round, with an average weight of 5–6 kg. The smooth green rind is marked with dark-green stripes, giving the watermelon an attractive appearance. The flesh is a rich raspberry color, dense, juicy, sweet, and aromatic, possessing excellent flavor qualities as well as dietary and medicinal properties. Thanks to its dense rind, the fruits withstand transportation and long-term storage well.
For successful cultivation of the New Year variety, bright and warm conditions are required, with an optimal temperature range for plant growth and development of +20–28°C. Sowing seeds is recommended when soil temperature reaches +16°C at a depth of 3–5 cm. Cultivation can be done either by direct sowing or by seedlings. The recommended planting density is 8–12 plants per 10 sq. m, with open-ground cultivation requiring formation of multiple stems per plant, pinching off the tops and covering stems with soil in several places to promote better development. Watermelons respond well to fertilization and prefer soils with neutral acidity.
The New Year variety is characterized by high yield and resistance to adverse conditions, making it popular among gardeners. It is ideal for fresh consumption due to its flavor and juiciness. Additionally, watermelons have good transportability and storage capacity, allowing them to retain their commercial qualities during storage and transport.
