Tulip Clusiana var. chrysantha

A Botanical Legacy in Your Garden

Tulipa clusiana var. chrysantha is not your average garden center hybrid; it is a captivating botanical species that retains the wild elegance of its Central Asian ancestors. Unlike modern commercial cultivars that demand constant maintenance and annual lifting, this variety is prized for its reliability and perennial nature. Once established, it naturalizes beautifully, forming persistent colonies that return year after year with effortless charm.

The Art of the Bloom

This variety is celebrated for its distinctive conical buds and a sophisticated color palette. The outer petals display a rich, carmine-red hue, which serves as a striking contrast to the vibrant, golden-yellow interior revealed when the flower opens fully in the sun. Subtle lilac undertones add a touch of antique elegance to the blooms, distinguishing them from the uniformity of standard tulip classes.

• Group: Late-flowering botanical tulips.
• Classification: Special/Species tulip group.
• Habit: Low-growing, robust, and highly wind-resistant.

Landscape Versatility

Due to its compact habit, Clusiana var. chrysantha is a staple in naturalistic garden design. It thrives in rock gardens, gravel beds, or as a structural feature at the front of mixed borders. Because it lacks the heavy, top-proportioned heads of modern cut-flower tulips, it remains resilient during unpredictable spring weather, maintaining its silhouette long after others have faded. Choosing this tulip is a decision for long-term garden stability rather than a one-season display.
