Sunflower ON Altair

The Genetic Basis of NA Altair

The selection work led by originator Mykola Mykhno on the NA Altair hybrid, marketed by Nertus, focuses on providing a resilient tool for intensive farming operations. As a simple hybrid, Altair exhibits excellent crop uniformity, which is vital for minimizing harvest losses and ensuring consistent maturity across the entire field.

Biological Defense: Comprehensive Resistance Profile

The key technical feature of this hybrid is its immunity profile. Under field conditions, the plant demonstrates high resistance to pathogens that typically limit sunflower yield in regions with high humidity or crop rotation imbalances:

• Peronosporosis: Genetic resistance to downy mildew prevents early infection of leaves and stems, preserving the plant's photosynthetic surface.
• Phomopsis and Phoma: These fungal diseases are frequent causes of premature wilting. The hybrid effectively blocks infection development, preventing tissue damage, which is crucial for high-quality seed filling.
• Stem Rot: High levels of stem protection maintain the plant's vascular system integrity until harvest time, preventing lodging and head breakage.

For the farmer, the practical value of such selection is clear: it reduces the need for frequent fungicide applications and provides predictable performance even under moderate infection pressure. As a product of the Ukrainian selection school, NA Altair is specifically adapted to the stress factors characteristic of the Ukrainian climate, including temperature fluctuations during the growing season.
