Description
Sugar beet variety Carlton is an early-maturing, high-yielding hybrid developed by leading companies Rijk Zwaan and Maribo Seed. This variety has a vegetation period of up to 90 days from emergence and is intended for cultivation in a moderately continental climate, where sufficient sunlight and warmth are provided. Carlton responds well to regular and uniform irrigation, as well as to intensification of cultivation technologies, which contributes to achieving maximum productivity.
The roots of the Carlton variety have a cylindrical shape, 15-18 cm long and weighing 200-250 grams. Their dark red color and rich burgundy hue on the cross-section without light rings make them attractive for the processing industry, where slicing into rings yields uniform and aesthetically pleasing results. The variety is characterized by high yield — up to 50-65 tons per hectare — as well as high sugar content, making it in demand both for fresh consumption and for industrial processing.
A distinctive feature of the Carlton variety is its resistance to major diseases, including ramulariosis and fusarium, as well as high resistance to pests. The tightly attached foliage facilitates mechanized harvesting, improving production efficiency. Moreover, the variety exhibits good transportability and storability, allowing its use for storage and sale on the fresh market. Carlton is suitable for early spring and summer sowings, ensuring a stable and high-quality yield.
