Description ZARYA
Zarya — a Soviet strawberry cultivar of early ripening, bred in 1954 at the Pavlovsk Experimental Station of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Industry. This variety is characterized by a compact, slightly spreading bush of medium vigor, about 20-25 cm high, with large dark green leaves. The flowers are bisexual, white, and gathered in multi-flowered inflorescences, while short pedicels are located at the level of the leaves or lower. Zarya berries have a bright red glossy skin, an egg-shaped form with a short neck, and light red flesh of medium density with a characteristic strawberry aroma. Taste quality is good; berries possess a classic tart-sweet flavor reminiscent of forest strawberries.

The variety is universal in use: fruits are suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. Yields are about 2 kg per square meter, which is a decent indicator for this variety. However, fruiting is unstable — berries become smaller at the end of the season, decreasing in weight from 15-20 grams to less than 10 grams, which reduces the variety's attractiveness for commercial cultivation. Transportability and shelf life of the berries are low due to the medium density of the flesh.

Zarya is undemanding in agrotechnics, grows well on various soils and in hot climates, which allows for cultivation in a wide range of regions. The variety has decent winter hardiness but is susceptible to fungal diseases, such as verticillium wilt and powdery mildew, therefore requiring timely prevention and observance of crop rotation. For successful cultivation, it is recommended to avoid soil drying out and to ensure regular care, including watering and pest control.
