PRINCE'S RED CARPET is a decorative portulaca (Portulaca grandiflora) that quickly forms a dense carpet of bright flowers and fleshy leaves, creating a picturesque background in garden compositions. The plant belongs to annual groundcover species native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, but adapts perfectly to moderate climatic conditions thanks to its drought and high-temperature resistance.
Portulaca leaves are large, fleshy, and greenish-red, giving the plant a rich visual effect. Flowers are double or simple, up to 6 cm in diameter, available in various colors: white, cream, yellow, orange, pink, and red. They open mainly in sunny weather, though some varieties can bloom even under cloudy skies. Flowering begins in June and continues until the first frost, providing a long-lasting decorative effect.
Care for PRINCE'S RED CARPET is minimal: the plant prefers bright lighting (at least 8–10 hours per day), sandy, poor, and dry soil. Watering is needed only during drought – once every 5–7 days, and fertilization is not mandatory. Portulaca is resistant to most pests and diseases; only rare cases of infection by the fungus Albugo portulaceae manifest as spots on the leaves.
Propagation is done via seeds, self-seeding, dividing clumps, or cuttings. Sowing seeds is best done in March–April, and seedlings are planted in open ground on cloudy days with a spacing of 10–15 cm between plants.
PRINCE'S RED CARPET is widely used in landscape design: as a border plant, on alpine hillsides, along paths, in rock gardens and flower beds. Thanks to its hardiness, it can replace lawns on dry soils and also serve as a decorative element in balcony and window boxes. This plant combines aesthetic appeal with practicality, making it an ideal choice for those who value beauty and ease of care.
