Cucumber 20 MD 818

The 20 MD 818 Cucumber: A Grower’s Perspective

When selecting a hybrid for an intensive crop cycle, the performance of the plant in the field is what matters most. The 20 MD 818 by Rijk Zwaan is a classic example of a vegetative hybrid that demands a precise approach to plant management. Designed for both glass greenhouses and open-field production, this variety is engineered for those who prioritize early harvest and consistency.

Operational Insights

The primary advantage of the 20 MD 818 is its rapid growth cycle, with fruit production starting in less than 40 days. Being a vegetative type, it requires consistent monitoring of plant density and pruning. Proper plant management is essential to balance the vigorous vegetative growth with fruit load, ensuring that the plant energy is directed toward the yield.

• Fruit Quality: The 7–9 cm length and an average weight of 80 grams make this cucumber ideal for standardized retail packaging.
• Market Appeal: The dark green color and fine-warted skin texture provide excellent shelf life and a premium appearance.
• Pollination efficiency: As a parthenocarpic variety, it eliminates the need for natural pollination, making it highly reliable in greenhouse conditions.

In terms of maintenance, the 20 MD 818 responds exceptionally well to automated fertigation and drip irrigation systems. To maximize yields, maintaining proper airflow and humidity control is recommended to prevent common physiological disorders. This hybrid acts as a high-performance tool in your agricultural inventory: provide the right technical input, and it will reward you with a uniform, high-quality harvest in a very short window.
