The ELPIDA cotton variety belongs to the species Gossypium hirsutum L. and is characterized by medium height, a conical plant shape with dense palmate leaves. The leaves have a medium midrib, the lower surface is pubescent, and the stem possesses gossypol glands and nectaries, which contribute to attracting beneficial insects.
The elliptical bolls of medium size are oval in longitudinal section and strongly opened. The surface shows interrupted ridges of medium depth, and the pedicel is also of medium length. Raw cotton content (fibers) is at a medium level, with the weight of one boll fiber approximately 5–6 grams. Fiber length reaches about 31–34 mm, linear density – 165–170 mtex, and breaking strength – 32.6 N.
Open-field raw cotton yield is approximately 33 c/ha, with home-gathered collections exceeding 70%. The vegetative period lasts 125 days. The variety is resistant to diseases and has weak susceptibility to pests such as spider mites and aphids. It is suitable for mechanical harvesting and is cultivated in the arid zone of the North Caucasus with a sum of active temperatures not less than 32000 °C.
