A high-performance rootstock for cherries and sour cherries, adapted to the climatic zones of Ukraine.
Description
A Reliable Foundation for Modern Orchards
The rootstock "Gizela 17.1," registered in 2025 by STOV "ENOHRAI," is a new solution for professional cherry and sour cherry cultivation. Designed for the climatic conditions of the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya regions of Ukraine, this rootstock provides trees with strong growth vigor and moderate branching, facilitating efficient canopy management.
Vegetation and Flowering Dynamics
Trees grafted on this rootstock exhibit a semi-upright habit and strong anthocyanin coloration of shoot tips during active growth. A significant advantage is the late flowering period, which helps orchards avoid the risks of late spring frosts. The large, round-petaled flowers are a hallmark of this variety, ensuring a robust start to the fruiting season.
Fruit Quality and Marketability
While primarily used as a rootstock, "Gizela 17.1" significantly influences the quality of the harvest:
- Market Appearance: The fruits are round with a brown-red skin of medium thickness, providing an attractive appearance for retail.
- Taste Profile: The yellow flesh is moderately juicy with low acidity and medium sugar content, offering a balanced flavor profile.
- Transportability: The medium firmness of the fruit and the absence of an abscission layer between the stem and the fruit ensure that the harvest remains intact during transport.
- Processing and Consumption: With a small pit and a favorable fruit-to-pit weight ratio, the produce is well-suited for both the fresh market and industrial processing.
The absence of a visible seam and the neat stem attachment give the berries an aesthetic appeal, which is essential for premium market segments.
