Montoya barley is a two-row brewing variety characterized by high yields of quality grain with low protein content. This variety exhibits high adaptability to various climatic zones and is suitable for early planting. For successful cultivation of Montoya, soils with high fertility are recommended, which promote better nutrient uptake and stable yields. Optimal application of mineral or organic fertilizers significantly increases crop productivity. Montoya plants demonstrate high growth energy early in the vegetative stage, rapid development, and good drought tolerance throughout the entire growing period. The Montoya variety is tolerant to most pathogens, especially false powdery mildew, but it has weak resistance to rust. Therefore, it is recommended to apply one fungicide treatment during the growing season to protect against this disease. Plants form an extensive, multi-stemmed bush with stems resistant to lodging and breakage. For weed control, seedlings are treated with pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides. Harvesting is conducted by direct combine harvesting at optimal times, avoiding over-maturity and grain shattering. Montoya is a spring barley variety widely used in risky farming zones such as the Forest-Steppe and Polissia. The average growing period for spring barley is 70-100 days. With proper agronomic practices and high-yielding varieties, yields can reach 7.32 t/ha and higher. The Montoya variety was introduced into Europe since 2012 and imported to Ukraine for commercial planting since 2016, confirming its reliability and demand among agricultural producers.
