Phytoplasmas cannot survive for extended periods outside a living host or a specific insect vector. They are obligate parasites, making them difficult to manage through standard antibiotic treatments used for fungal or bacterial infections.

Transmission occurs primarily through the feeding activities of phloem-sucking insects, most commonly leafhoppers. After acquiring the pathogen from an infected plant, the insect remains a vector for the rest of its lifespan.

Once inside the plant, the phytoplasma interferes with the translocation of photosynthetic products. This disruption leads to systemic metabolic collapse, resulting in stunted growth and chlorosis.

Due to the difficulty of culturing phytoplasmas in laboratories, diagnosis often relies on molecular techniques such as PCR to identify the presence of the pathogen within the plant's DNA.
