Dry fruit rot of raspberry is a collective group of pathological conditions caused by a complex of phytopathogenic fungi, most commonly from the Botrytis, Cladosporium, and Alternaria genera. These microorganisms are opportunistic pathogens that attack weakened plant tissues.

A critical factor is the density of the planting, which prevents air circulation within the canes. In such conditions, a microclimate ideal for fungal reproduction is created.
Damage caused by pests (e.g., raspberry beetles) creates entry points for pathogens. Any micro-cracks on the fruit skin during ripening trigger the decay process.
