Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, leaving the shrub looking thin and sickly. This loss of foliage is particularly detrimental in the mid-to-late summer months when the plant should be at its most decorative.

In a nursery context, the presence of this fungus is devastating. Entire batches of ornamental plants can be rendered unsellable, leading to substantial economic losses for growers.

If the infection persists for multiple seasons, it exhausts the plant's internal resources. This chronic stress makes the shrub highly susceptible to secondary pathogens, which can eventually lead to death.

Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach centered on sanitation and environmental management. Ensuring adequate airflow by proper spacing is the first step in prevention.

Sanitation is paramount; all fallen leaves and infected branches must be removed and destroyed (not composted) at the end of the season to eliminate the overwintering inoculum.

Chemical intervention may be necessary in severe cases. Fungicides containing copper or systemic products labelled for leaf spot diseases are effective when applied at the first sign of symptoms.
