The fungus develops mycelia within the host leaves, eventually producing pycnidia. These small, flask-shaped structures rupture the plant epidermis, serving as the primary site for spore production.

Asteromella spreads through pycnidiospores, which are dispersed primarily by water splash and wind. This mechanism ensures the rapid colonization of healthy tissues during periods of high humidity.

The pathogen survives the winter in leaf litter and infected plant debris. When environmental conditions improve in the spring, the fungus resumes activity, releasing spores to infect new foliage.

Scientific studies indicate that the fungus has a relatively high plasticity regarding temperature, allowing it to remain active across different climatic zones and seasons.
