The soil requirements are specific: it performs best in rich, loamy soils with a neutral pH. It struggles significantly in dry, sandy, or heavily compacted soils, often disappearing from the stand if the water table drops too low during summer.
It is winter-hardy and capable of enduring cold snaps, but its shallow root system makes it vulnerable to heat stress. Effective management requires ensuring high soil fertility and maintaining moisture levels during the peak growth months.

Rough meadow-grass provides high-quality forage rich in protein and sugars. It is highly palatable to livestock, making it a favored grass in rotational grazing systems where moisture can be managed effectively.
Under optimal conditions, especially in river floodplains, it can produce multiple cuts per year. Its ability to regrow rapidly after grazing or mowing, known as 'regrowth potential', is one of its most desirable agronomic traits.
