Botanically, the plant features specialized root-like structures called haustoria. These structures penetrate the bark of the host, establishing a complex vascular connection that allows the parasite to thrive even during periods of severe drought.

Propagation is primarily avian-mediated; birds consume the succulent berries and deposit the seeds onto the branches of suitable hosts. The seeds are covered in a sticky substance known as viscin, which ensures they remain attached to the tree bark until germination.

In terms of agriculture and forestry, Phoradendron schottii is generally managed as a pest. It has no cultivated use; instead, it is studied as an ecological agent that modifies forest canopy structure and influences the health of affected woody species.

The primary threat associated with this species is its invasive growth pattern on trees, which can significantly weaken the host. Over time, heavy infestations lead to structural instability and a decline in the host's overall growth rate and timber value.

Pathological symptoms often include chlorosis and stunted growth of the host tree. Furthermore, the localized trauma caused by haustoria penetration serves as an entry point for various secondary wood-decay fungi, increasing the risk of tree death.

Witch's broom formations are a common physical symptom observed on infected branches. These dense, abnormal growths not only disfigure the tree but also consume significant energy reserves that the tree would otherwise use for maintenance and defense.

Management strategies focus on physical removal, which involves pruning affected limbs back to the nearest branch collar. Chemical control methods, such as the application of growth regulators or herbicides, are subject to strict limitations to prevent damage to the host plant.

Despite being considered a pest, the plant provides essential ecosystem services. During winter months, when resources are scarce, the berries of Phoradendron schottii provide a critical food source for various bird species, supporting local biodiversity.
