For commercial or garden use, it is recommended to use stratified seeds to improve germination rates. Seeds should be planted at a depth of 1–2 cm, followed by compacting the soil surface.

Vegetative propagation via cuttings is also feasible, provided the environment is kept at high humidity to encourage root development. This method is crucial for maintaining desirable varietal traits in selective breeding.

In temperate regions, starting seeds indoors during March or April is advisable. This practice ensures that the root system is well-established before transplanting the seedlings into the open field.

Initial thinning of seedlings should occur 3–4 weeks after emergence, keeping only the most vigorous plants. Because this vine grows rapidly, maintaining a row spacing of 50–70 cm is essential for proper air circulation.

Native to East Asia (China, Korea, and Japan), this plant thrives in warm, moderately humid climates. Being a climbing vine, Metaplexis requires sturdy supports to reach its full potential, often growing 3–5 meters in length.

The crop is not overly demanding regarding soil type, but it performs best in light, fertile loams with excellent drainage. Waterlogging is detrimental to the root system and often serves as a precursor to fungal infections.

Optimal photosynthesis and biomass accumulation require sunny or lightly shaded sites. Insufficient light significantly reduces growth rates, which adversely affects the production of both fiber and seed pods.

While the plant shows moderate frost resistance, mulching the root zone is recommended in colder regions to ensure winter survival. During the intensive growing season, regular watering is critical, especially during dry summer spells.

Applying nitrogen-rich fertilizers in early summer promotes shoot formation. By mid-season, it is advisable to switch to phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to harden tissues before the onset of dormancy.

Aphids and spider mites are the primary pests affecting Metaplexis, as they feed on the sap of young leaves and succulent shoots. Regular scouting of the canopy is vital to detect infestations at early stages.

In humid conditions, the vine is prone to powdery mildew, characterized by a white, dusty growth on the leaf surfaces. Control measures include sulfur-based fungicides or appropriate biological treatments.

Root rot remains a significant threat caused by poor irrigation management or improper drainage. Implementing strict crop rotation and ensuring the soil does not stay saturated are the best preventative strategies.

Caterpillars of various Lepidoptera species may damage the foliage, negatively impacting biomass quality. In cases of severe infestation, biological insecticides that are safe for the surrounding environment should be utilized.

Preventing viral outbreaks involves diligent weed control in the aisles, as weeds often act as vectors for diseases. Using healthy, pathogen-free planting stock is the foundation of a successful growing season.
