The Menyanthaceae family consists of perennial aquatic and wetland herbaceous plants. The most notable member of agricultural interest is Menyanthes trifoliata, commonly known as the bog bean. This species is cultivated primarily for its pharmacological properties, thriving in waterlogged environments where few other crops can establish themselves effectively.

These plants are native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, spanning across Europe, Asia, and North America. Their natural habitat includes peat bogs, marshes, and the margins of ponds. In an agricultural setting, they require wetland reclamation areas or specifically constructed aquatic garden beds that mimic their natural environmental conditions to ensure optimal growth and chemical synthesis.

Botanically, Menyanthaceae are characterized by creeping rhizomes and long-petioled leaves. The flowering mechanism is highly developed, producing racemose inflorescences with white or light-pink flowers during the late spring. Climatic and soil requirements are specific: the culture demands highly acidic, peat-rich soils and a constant, stable water level.
