Sowing should ideally take place in early spring once soil temperatures reach 8–10 degrees Celsius. Seeds require consistent moisture to germinate, so ensuring good soil-to-seed contact is essential for success.

Seeds are sown at a depth of 1–2 centimeters. For commercial production, it is recommended to maintain row spacing of 45 to 60 centimeters, allowing sufficient space for the rosette to thrive in year one.

Seedlings typically emerge within 2–3 weeks. Once the plants reach the 2–3 true leaf stage, thinning is necessary to ensure a final spacing of 20–30 centimeters between individual plants.

As a robust crop, teasel exhibits vigorous early growth. Managing weeds during the first year is vital, as heavy weed pressure can easily overwhelm the young rosettes.

Teasel prefers deep, loamy soils that are rich in organic matter and have a neutral pH. It thrives in soils with good moisture retention capabilities.

This crop is highly light-demanding. Choosing a sunny, open location is critical to ensure the proper development of the flower heads and the elasticity of their specialized hooked bracts.

While teasel has moderate drought tolerance, adequate water during the flowering stem formation phase is necessary to prevent the flower heads from becoming small or deformed.

Optimal growth occurs at temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. Being a biennial, it is hardy enough to survive winters once the basal rosette is well-established.

Teasel is generally resistant to many agricultural pests. However, aphids can occasionally infest the young foliage, causing stunted growth and leaf distortion.

Powdery mildew represents the most significant disease threat, particularly in humid, poorly ventilated, or overly dense plantings. It presents as a white, powdery coating on leaves.
