Arrow-leaf wild ginger (Asarum arifolium) is a member of the Aristolochiaceae family. It is a perennial, evergreen species native to the southeastern United States. The plant is widely recognized for its heart-shaped, mottled leaves which provide excellent ground cover in low-light environments.
The cultivation of this species requires strict adherence to shade-based gardening techniques. As an understory plant, it thrives in deep or partial shade. Exposure to direct sunlight is detrimental, as it typically leads to chlorosis and the wilting of the foliage, drastically reducing its ornamental value.
The species prefers moist, nutrient-rich soils that are slightly acidic. It is essential that the growing medium provides excellent drainage, as the fleshy rootstock is prone to decay if the soil remains waterlogged for extended periods, especially during cooler dormant seasons.
In terms of climate, Asarum arifolium prefers temperate zones with high humidity. In regions with harsh winters, providing a thick layer of organic mulch is recommended to insulate the shallow root system and maintain soil moisture levels throughout the year.
Maintenance is relatively straightforward but requires consistency. Minimal intervention is needed, provided that the plant is placed in an area with organic debris or leaf mold. Avoiding deep cultivation around the plant is vital to prevent mechanical damage to its creeping rhizomes.

The primary biotic threats to Arrow-leaf wild ginger are gastropods, such as slugs and snails, which can cause severe aesthetic damage by skeletonizing the leaves. Integrated pest management, including the use of iron phosphate baits or copper barriers, is highly effective in mitigating these impacts.
Fungal diseases, including leaf spot pathogens, may occasionally affect the foliage if the planting density is too high or if air circulation is compromised. Ensuring proper spacing during installation and removing dead leaves in early spring are key preventative measures to keep the colony healthy.
